Since 2016, the classics have been playing on the oldest stage in Portugal. Reviving this monument for the purpose it was built for some 2000 years ago is one of the most emblematic undertakings of the Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre!
For the first time ever our annual programme includes the presentation of a Latin author, Plautus, with the play Casina, written in the 2nd century BC. A somewhat licentious play, it was also the author's most successful.
As Joaquim Horta, director of the play, points out: «The action in Casina is centred on a power struggle between the masculine and the feminine and around a rivalry between Lisidamo and Eutinico, father and son and both in love with a young slave».
The director further explains that «Plautus' comedies are adaptations for a Roman audience of models from Greek New Comedy» and that «character types such as the jealous father, the betrayed wife, the charlatan and the dishonest slave are typical figures in these plays».
Performed by a cast that includes Catarina Requeijo, Inês Rosado, Joaquim Horta, Vicente Wallenstein and Vítor Silva Costa, Lídia Fernandes, coordinator of the Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre, explains that the play «can be understood through the prism of the present day, with greed, humiliation, lies and daring intertwining in the human spirit».
The play will be performed on the oldest stage in Portugal from Wednesday to Sunday on 6 to 23 July. All performances begin at 9:30pm.
