The historiography of the Museu Monográfico de Conimbriga, later the Museu Nacional (MMC-MN), traces the methodological evolution of national archaeological research and museology. This presentation explores how scientific knowledge and national and international recognition led to a unique cultural syncretism between museum and territory. Both are essential to the identity of the other and the whole.

In this context of communion, the MMC-MN's mission is renewed with the contribution of several generations, driving the future of an archaeological site with a museum that safeguards an archaeological site still being explored. Excavations on the site began in 1899 and comprised around 14% of what is understood to be the area of the ancient city, including both the pre-Roman and post-Roman periods.

The heritage, landscape, geological and environmental dimensions transform the Conimbriga plateau and its respective territory into a privileged place for developing our understanding of the central region of Portugal.

Diachronic analysis of the results of several work methodologies shows how Conimbriga is a unique case, providing deep insight into the role of science and museums in constructing solid and lasting identities based on research and knowledge.
