When King Manuel I decided in 1512 that Lisbon would hold the monopoly on the slave trade for the entire empire, the city became one of the world’s largest slaving ports until 1761, when it was outlawed. This tour aims to identify some of the places that marked the daily lives of the huge slave population that lived in Lisbon for centuries.
