Prometheus Bound was written by Aeschylus around 2,500 years ago in Greece, at a time of transition from tyrannical to democratic power. The earliest harbingers of our democracy can be found in this story. The battle between the oppressor who wants to maintain his yoke and doctrine, who wants to control everyone's thinking, and a new way of thinking, fairer and more balanced, where the chances for a free and different way of thinking from that which has been imposed find their space to grow.
At a time when totalitarian movements that threaten democracy and freedom are re-emerging and gaining ground, this text is extremely topical. Today, it is essential to demonstrate the importance of human freedom and to defend the right to equality, justice, and freedom of expression.
In this version, staged by Beto Coville and performed by António Camelier, Eurico Lopes, Luísa Ortigoso, and Sara Barradas, the lack of mercy in the actions of Zeus and then Prometheus, seeing no means to achieve their goals, make a clear connection to current events we are witnessing.
