The first session of the 2022 programme of the Museum and the City will be devoted to St Vincent, traditional former patron saint of Lisbon, from the arrival of his relics in 1173. From the start of Lisbon’s devotion to this martyr till practically nowadays, there have been many demonstrations of the cult of this saint. Eras and works of art can be identified in which the devotion to St Vincent was unequivocally and immediately linked to Lisbon.
In this guided visit, close to 22 January (day on which St Vincent is commemorated), Paulo Almeida Fernandes, art historian of the Museum of Lisbon, will address a number of aspects of the historical relationship between the city and its former patron saint based on the museum’s collection, in addition to exploring other tangible and intangible realities of the rich and multifaceted history of Lisbon.
