Jug

Second half of the 2nd century BCE

Jug

ML.ARQ.0674

Discovered during excavations in Beco do Forno do Castelo in 2003-2004 and 2010, this jug provides evidence of the first Roman occupation of part of the highest area of Olisipo, now Lisbon, near the site where São Jorge Castle was built centuries later. The architectural remains identified point to a dwelling from the Roman Republic period, displaying a different urban layout and construction techniques to the Iron Age buildings also found at the site and diverging from the earlier indigenous urban layout.

Unlike the architectural remains, the black colour and burnished geometric and lattice decorations on the jug suggest that it was made using Iron Age techniques.
