Model of the city of Lisbon, detail

CARVALHO, Luiz Caetano de

1915-1930

Final model

MC.MAQ.0025

Luís Caetano Pereira de Carvalho was a building contractor, Second Commander of the Municipal Public Rescue Corps and one of the most commended municipal firefighters of Lisbon. He was distinguished with the decoration of Ancient and Very Noble Military Order of the Tower and of the Sword, of the Valour, Loyalty and Merit (1908) and made a Knight in the Military Order of Christ (1919).

The model shows Lisbon’s Baixa district and its connections with the Mouraria neighbourhood (which did not yet include the Martim Moniz Square) and the start of the Almirante Reis Avenue, nestled against São Jorge Castle and the hill of Santana. It was finished in 1926 and Luís Pereira de Carvalho, now retired, showed it for the first time at the Carmo Archaeological Museum on 13 May 1926, then a municipal public holiday to mark the birth of the Marquis of Pombal.
