The 1755 earthquake destroyed a large part of Lisbon. This dramatic episode changed forever the city’s geography and impacted European mentalities and culture. According to a modern urban plan, the city’s reconstruction gave birth to a new downtown of wide streets and geometric layout, the so-called Baixa.
