All ages

From the north to the south of Portugal there are countless legends about wonders performed by Saint Anthony, told in texts from the 17th century to the present day, which reflect the great closeness the people feel to their saint, affectionately known as Sant'Antoninho and to whom people ask all manner of things.

101 stories can now be found in the book Lendas e Milagres de Santo António em Portugal (Legends and Miracles of Saint Anthony in Portugal), published by the Saint Anthony Studies and Research Centre of the Museum of Lisbon – Santo António. It brings together texts from a vast bibliography that includes classic authors of Portuguese ethnography such as Leite de Vasconcelos, Teófilo de Braga, Armando de Matos, Adolfo Coelho, Carlos Sertório and Gentil Marques, Antonian scholars such as Manoel Bernardes Branco, Mário Gonçalves Viana and Manuel de Azevedo, and various local history researchers, whose work is fundamental to the memory of a people.
